About the role Australian Retirement Trust is seeking a skilled Application Support Specialist to join our Technology team, with a primary focus on supporting and maintaining our orchestration platform (BizTalk). Your experience with APIs and orchestration platforms similar to BizTalk will assist in ensuring the reliable orchestration of financial transactions (such as contributions, benefit payments, rollovers, and compliance reporting). Knowledge of queuing /async design will be relevant in ensuring our seamless integration with core record-keeping systems and databases, and overall application stability in a high-volume, regulated superannuation environment. You will be the go-to expert for troubleshooting processing and integration issues, leveraging tools like ServiceNow for incident and problem management, Splunk for advanced monitoring and alerting, SQL Server for data investigations, and orchestrator diagnostics to quickly identify root causes, resolve issues, and minimize any impact on transaction processing and member services. Key Responsibilities: - Provide specialist support for our integration and orchestration platform (BizTalk) and it's downstream dependencies. orchestrations that manage complex financial transactions, ensuring reliable message routing, transformation, processing, exception handling, and transaction integrity across systems.
- Use ServiceNow as the primary platform for incident logging, tracking, problem management, change requests, and stakeholder communication – creating, updating, and resolving tickets efficiently while adhering to ITIL best practices.
Troubleshoot and resolve issues with any BizTalk integrations with our record-keeping databases (SQL Server) and other financial systems, including data validation, suspended messages, orchestration failures, and transaction recovery. - Perform root cause analysis on integration errors, transaction delays, or failures; implement permanent fixes, reprocess messages, and apply patches/updates to BizTalk artifacts (schemas, maps, pipelines, orchestrations).
- Proactively monitor platform environments and financial transaction flows using Splunk for log analysis and custom dashboards, alongside BizTalk Administration Console, SQL queries, and alerting tools to detect performance issues, dead-lettered messages, throttling, or anomalies before they impact operations.
- Set up and manage alerting and monitoring rules to notify the team of critical thresholds (e.g., suspended queues, host instance failures, or transaction backlogs), enabling rapid response and escalation.
- Run SQL queries and PowerShell scripts to investigate data inconsistencies, query BizTalk databases (MessageBox, Tracking, Management), and support transaction reconciliation/reporting.
- Apply ITIL processes rigorously through ServiceNow: collate incidents into problem records, raise and implement Change Requests for configurations, deployments, or adapter updates.
- Maintain documentation of processes, support procedures, monitoring dashboards, and root cause analyses.
- Instruct business stakeholders and team members on our integrated systems, transaction flows, ServiceNow workflows, and basic troubleshooting.
- Manage incidents end-to-end, including escalation to development teams.
- Participate in an on-call roster for after-hours support of mission-critical financial transaction processing.
Additional Technical Responsibilities:
Experience with API and orchestration platforms like BizTalk or similar. Support related technologies such as .NET components, WCF adapters, and SQL Server integrations. This role is a permanent opportunity and will ideally be Brisbane based, but we will consider Melbourne or Sydney. About you You are a proactive, detail-oriented specialist with deep expertise in BizTalk Server for financial and transactional integrations. You excel in high-stakes, regulated environments where data accuracy, transaction reliability, rapid root cause identification, and minimal downtime are non-negotiable. Your strong problem-solving skills—combined with proficiency in ServiceNow, Splunk, alerting tools, and clear communication—make you a trusted partner for technical and business teams in superannuation operations. Key Skills and Experience: - Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or equivalent.
- Proven experience supporting finance applications in a production environment, particularly orchestrations handling financial transactions, high-volume messaging, or compliance integrations.
- Experience integrating applications with databases (SQL Server) and core record-keeping/financial systems, including polling, stored procedures, data transformation, and reconciliation.
- Proficiency in ServiceNow for ITIL-aligned incident/problem/change management, ticket handling, and workflow processes.
- Expertise in Splunk (or similar tools) for monitoring, log querying, dashboard creation, and setting up proactive alerts on BizTalk health/performance metrics.
- Solid understanding of alerting and monitoring best practices for middleware/integration platforms, including threshold-based notifications and automated responses.
- Skills in SQL queries, PowerShell scripting, and root cause analysis for transactional failures and data issues.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly identify and resolve root causes of complex integration problems, minimizing business impact.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills in mission-critical systems.
- Effective communication with technical (developers, DBAs) and non-technical (business, compliance) stakeholders.
- Experience liaising with vendors (e.g., Microsoft) for support/escalations.
- Knowledge of SDLC/Agile methodologies and ITIL Foundation certification (desirable); understanding of financial services/regulatory requirements (e.g., superannuation transactions) is a plus.
- Ability to participate in an on-call roster for critical financial systems.
