Data Protection Lead

About the role

We’re looking for an experienced and passionate Lead who will take their knowledge in security and data to protect our members personal information. As Data Protection Lead, you’ll: 

 

  • Lead tactical and strategic uplift for data protection and security processes, including supporting responsible adoption of AI technologies.
  • Act as the technical owner for Varonis and Microsoft Purview, designing, building, and maintaining policies for discovery scanning, classification, labelling, DLP detection, monitoring, reporting, and alerting.
  • Oversee the response to discovery, analysis, and exporting of digital evidence for cyber incidents, HR investigations, financial crime reviews, and legal proceedings, ensuring compliance with internal policies and regulatory obligations.
  • Central ownership of DLP controls and solutions across endpoint, storage, cloud services, and email platforms.
  • Consulting on data security requirements across ART’s data governance strategy and programs, integrating data protection controls and recommending technologies.
  • Leading investigations into data access anomalies, insider threats, and policy violations, enforcing controls and supporting breach detection.
  • Contributing to strategic planning and governance initiatives within Information Security and broader enterprise programs.
  • Playing a key role in training and awareness programs to promote a culture of data protection across ART, and staying current with emerging threats, technologies, and regulatory changes.

About you

It goes without saying you'll be a great communicator with top notch interpersonal skills. We'll also expect you to pick up problems and come up with quick, creative ways to solve them. It's quite likely you tick some of the following boxes too:  

  • Proven hands-on experience leading and managing data protection platforms such as Microsoft Purview and Varonis, including policy design and configuration.
  • Tactical and strategic understanding of data discovery, classification, labelling, and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) controls across endpoints, cloud, storage, and email.
  • Hands-on experience with eDiscovery tools, especially Microsoft eDiscovery, and managing digital evidence handling processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor and investigate data access anomalies, insider threats, and policy violations.
  • Experience supporting or leading evidence gathering for HR investigations and legal proceedings involving digital evidence.
  • Experience aligning technical controls with enterprise data governance strategies.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills across security, data, AI, and technical teams.
  • Ability to contribute to training and awareness programs that promote a culture of data protection.
  • Solid understanding of data governance frameworks, privacy legislation, and regulatory obligations (e.g., Australian Privacy Act, APRA CPS 234).
  • Experience contributing to enterprise-wide data governance or risk management strategy.
  • Experience supporting or leading cybersecurity or IT incident response.
  • Experience leading or mentoring technical staff.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Information Technology, Information Security, Data Science, or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or Microsoft Certified: Information Protection Administrator.
